Default 88gt 5spd manual question

Hi, I was driving my mustang today and i was waiting to make a right turn onto a major road. I took off in first gear and once i got rolling i gave it full throttle and shifted into second gear and gave it full throttle again. when i went to third gear the transmission made a loud grind noise and the rps went way up. Now it seems if i give it any more than half throttle that 3rd gear pops out and grinds. is my transmission toast? it seems that my throttle was stuck when i was shifting the gears from second to third. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as getting a rebuild kit ($295 from summit racing) or a new trany ($1200) also what would make my throttle stick when i floor it. I lubed the cable when I got home.

Well probably having troubles with the synchronizers going bad for 3rd gear...I've been lucky and never had troubles with any T5 Mustangs I've drove so I'm not positive. Throttle seeming stuck is probably just from the transmission trouble because when it popped/grinded did you still have it floored? Also seems like you might have missed third because the trans wasn't cooperating.

Word of advice don't try to powershifting into 3rd with a stock T5....it's never worked for me, probably my lack of experience played a big part tho

Your synchonizers are gone. If you feel confident, rebuild it yourself--plenty of information out there for T-5s. If you don't wanna do it or don't have the time, pay someone else.

I did the core exchange with astro performance and am very happy with the upgrade. Turned out cheaper than buying a new unit and best of all its stronger than factory.

Well you broke something, and likely the more you drive it the worse it will be. There's lots of choices when it comes to what to do with a blown T-5. If you're mostly stock I'd rebuild it to stock spec and stop power shifting it. Stock T-5's don't like being abused. If you're planning on or already have built up that motor, I would consider buying a high performance rebuild kit (such as the g-force), or if your not comfortable with your mechanical skills I'd consider something like what Scott suggested. There's many shops that will trade you (for a price, of course) a freshly rebuilt T-5 optimized for high power for your blown stocker.

Here's the T-5 manual to walk you through a rebuild:
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...-0510-0199.pdf

If your confused about something just Google "T-5 rebuild", there's buckets of information out there including walkthroughs with color pictures and what not.

My '87 Lincoln used to get a sticky throttle (very similar motor), it was the throttle digging into the TPS and getting stuck on it. I replaced the sensor and modified the throttle body so it wouldn't do it anymore, but I can't remember how I did it now. Too much beer since then.

thanks for the advice, I will look into getting a reman from astro performance. For the record I was not powershifting my gt. I let off the gas each time i shifted gears but the throttle stuck from second to third. which I guess was an unintentional power shift. My gt is slightly modified. I have sub frame connectors, ford racing lowering springs, strange adjustable shocks, underdrive pulleys with the ac and smog pump delete, ported intake, 70mm throttle body, mass air conversion kit, bbk headers, high flow cats, flowmasters, 355 gears, aluminum drive shaft, functonal ram air hood and a king cobra clutch. I'm guessing im around 250hp with these mods but im not sure. should i just get the HD trans from astro? I was also thinking my throttle sticking was due to the throttle body getting gummed up. I will also check the tps sensor/cable

I did the 450 HP/330 torque option from them (Astro Performance), but have only run it for about 600 miles, two passes at the track and about 10 passes on the back roads here practicing launch/shifting. No problems yet (4K launch/5,500 shift). I will have better answers if it lasts through next season as the goal is to run in the sportsman brackets here (if Spokane County Raceway is open). Engine has #24 injectors, 73mm maf, 65 tb, explorer intake, edelbrock performer heads, erson cam #E212838, bbk shorties, bassani x-pipe.

As mentioned, there are loads of options out there. Take your time and figure out the best one for you.

I was just curious, I noticed you have a 88 Canadian mustang. Is that any different than a US mustang?

Lots of small differences as outlined at the above listed link. Mine is a GT (Cobra).

The funniest part is when someone looks at the speedometer when I'm driving and doesn't realize/know its in kilometers per hour.

I can't look for it now, but some time ago, I posted a link to a FREE download on the T-5 trans. It's a huge file (70+ pages), but it's a life-saver when you do these trannys yourself! Trust me- if I can do it, anyone can! Just do a SEARCH, you should be able to find the link.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Here's the link I mentioned above:
T5 Repair Manual.
Again, be aware it is a HUGE, but very worthwhile download file.

I had the same problem in a 90 LX 5.0 I owned years ago. I had to rebuild the trans. If you are running the stock or replacement clutch with sticky tires that would cause it. I was running a Dunlop SP-9000, which is not a real sticky tire, but just enough to fry my trans. I know Summit has a real good t-5 rebuild kit. It is fairly cheap and has realy good parts for the price.

If you go to www.racingjunk.com, you may be able to find a TKO and swap parts for dirt cheap considering.
