Hey i'm sure this question has been asked quite a bit, but I've got a 1987 Mustang GT and I was wondering how to figure out if I've got the 3.08 or the 2.72 gears. Thanks guys.

Four ways, and the first two will only tell you what was original equipment, not necessarily what's in there now (if it was changed)...

1. Look under AX on the Vehicle Certification Label that is affixed to the rear face of the left (driver) door.

M = 2.73:1 w/ Traction-Lok
Z = 3.08:1 w/ Traction-Lok
E = 3.27:1 w/ Traction-Lok
R = 3.45:1 w/ Traction-Lok (GT Turbo only)

2. Look at the Axle Tag which is attached to the differential cover, under one of the bolts. The numbers on the lower left of the tag should be self-explanantory.

3. Jack the rear of the vehicle up, support it with jackstands, and chock the front tires. Mark the driveshaft and one tire. Put the transmission in neutral. Spin the tire ONE full revolution and count how many times the driveshaft rotates (including partial). The number of driveshaft rotations is the ratio.

4. Jack the rear of the vehicle up, support it with jackstands, and chock the front tires. Remove the differential housing cover. Count the number of teeth on the ring and pinions gears. Divide the ring gear's tooth-count by the pinion gear's tooth-count.
