86 GT Convert.
To shorten a long story, I have found hidden in the depths of the upper wheel arches and fenders a bit of rust which could vertually be undetectable, unless the inner guards are removed. See attached pics of both Passenger and Drivers side. To date I have descaled and wire brushed as best as and sprayed with Rust Converter followed by a Rust Preventative. See pic 5. From here I plan to seal the holes and anywhere where water may enter from the windscreen with silicone and then spray over with the Rust Preventative.
Is this a good path to follow? any other suggestions?

Here in the rust belt, we say rust always wins in the end. It sounds to me like you are doing everything you can to prolong life. Good luck and good day!

Pic 1 and pic 2. Thats not an easy spot to get to. The only real fix for that is to drill the spot welds out and take care of the rust from the inside, ALL OF IT. Start with bare metal, clean it, prep it, spray it with weld-thru primer and weld it back together. Prime it again and paint it.

Pic 3. That doesnt look quite as bad as pic 1 and 2 but still needs to be fixed. if not it willcontinue to rust.

Pic 4 and pic 5. That needs complete replacement. There is no saving that.

For every spot of rust you can see, there is more you cant. The unibody is layered with as many as 2 or 3 sheets of steel in some places so proper welding is a must.

From the Inside

To get to the inside I have removed the Dash. Halve a dozen or so bolts, no probs, and then all the electrical connx, now that was not much fun, and then took the Heater Case as well. I have to thank the Fox Mustang Mag for there articiles on the Dash Pad Restore and the Heater Core Replacament, as this was a big help in the how to department. From here I will have a go at welding a patch, or maybe it's time to call in the professionals. Anyway, in years to come, if i have an annoying little leak from the Windscreen, there's a good chance I should remember where it's coming from.
