Yep, that's right - our '91 GT is finally back on the road with its freshly rebuilt motor, new 2031 Crane cam, 24 lb injectors, Canton oil pan/windage tray, Pro-M mass air, etc. Right on schedule, too (for a change).

David spent part of last Friday getting the engine ready to drop back into the car (installing lower intake, distributor, injectors, etc.) and then spent the rest of the weekend (with some assistance from me) installing it into the car, getting things hooked back up and getting it running. Only a few obstacles were encountered...

(1) the Canton oil pan is bigger (wider) than the stock pan and required the unexpected removal and reinstallation of the motor mounts (which didn't want to come out very easily) and some other jockeying around to clear the K-member and stock starter in order to get the motor back into the car

(2) after getting it running, a test drive indicated that it had a definite miss and some surging/dying problems at idle - the miss was assumed to be a bad spark plug, but it was discovered last night that one of the fuel injectors was not plugged in to the wiring harness - oops LOL! - the surging/dying problem was solved by fixing a few minor vacuum leaks (line going to charcoal cannister and line going to EGR).

David has some dyno time scheduled for this Saturday over in Omaha, NE to get the car tuned... so for the rest of the week, I get the fun job of racking up some miles on the car before it gets dynoed. (In case you're wondering why I get to drive it this week and not David, I drive the furthest distance to work - I have 22 miles round trip - he only has about 4 miles round trip.)

Tonight, David is planning to retorque the heads (as recommended by the engine shop) and by the end of the week, I should have enough miles on it to be ready for the dyno on Saturday. Unfortunately, I can't go along to see it get dynoed on Saturday (kids have too many things going on), but, hopefully, David will get some good photos and video. I will post some updates/photos to our '91 GT web page as soon as I get the chance, for anyone that's interested.

After that, we have another week before the first autocross of the season. Whoohoo!

I'll be looking forward to the updates and pictures of the new engine.

Does your dyno time include tuning and how many pulls will you be doing?

Sounds like fun Kathy! Now you both can enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Off the cuff, does it feel like a completely different car comparing it to when the car was last healthy?
Please keep us posted on the dyno pulls!
It's always interesting to see what people's motors are making after a reworking.
Good luck with the up and coming season too!

Hi, Mick!

Yes, the dyno time includes tuning and it is by the hour. I guess they'll just keep doing pulls until they get the right tune on it. There probably isn't a whole lot of tuning to do since we don't have a chip or anything - just pretty much fuel pressure and timing, I guess.

Well, at this point, the only really noticable difference is a slightly meaner-sounding idle due to the cam (it's got just a little bit of "lope" to it now). But the engine shop told us to get 100 easy break-in miles on it first then "drive it like you stole it". So we really haven't had a chance to get on it too hard yet. I figure we've got around 70 miles on it right now...

Thanks, Chris. I'll be scanning and posting the dyno sheets on our GT's web page along with some photos, etc. hopefully on Sunday. It will be interesting to see what the car dynos at now with the cam, bigger injectors, porting, etc. - it was dynoed 3-4 years ago and I believe it had around 275 rwhp.
