Question

I am looking for my next stang and have found an 89 GT w/ AOD and an 89 LX hatch w/ T-5. I want a GT, but I also want a 5 speed, and Im gettin' tired of looking! Any ideas?

Isn't that just the way things are. When I started looking I was looking for an AOD GT and I kept finding 5speed GTs and LXs . I think it is a matter of personal taste. Which one do you like better, which one has less miles, other options, conditions, etc.. I think it is easier to make the LX look like a GT then change an AOD to a T-5 but the LX is faster so let us know what you decide.

Im like that right now, im looking for a LX in good shape and all i can find is GT's in good shape, im starting to think i'll go GT again.

i hear ya...lookin for an 86-89 5.0 notchback with an aod for a couple months now...not finding anything close to what i want...let alone in my area or for a decent price tag

You have to ask yourself the question, what do I want the Mustang for? Looks? Performance? What options do I want? I personally like the "Clean" look of the LX 5.0 but I also think the GT is more "Stylish". Performance wise, the LX wins hands down. Now in options, the GT probably had more options than the LX. This is just my personal choice.

Then you buy an aftermarket shifter and all is well. And driving is a lot more fun!

yes i agree the steeda tri-ax makes it impossible to mis-shift i've had mine for 5 months now and haven't mis-shifted...i'm very happy with it and recommend it to everyone looking for an aftermarket shifter

A better (aftermarket) shifter helps eliminate missed shifts by guiding the shifter lever into the proper gear instead of hanging up but they won't help miss-shifting due to hands and feet that can't sync up. I do have an aftermarket shifter(Hurst) on my T-5 and I've still missed shifts because my feet were quicker than my hand. I shifted so quickly that I let the clutch out before the shifter was moved to the next gear. And no it's not just a missed shift due to the shifter it self - when I executed shifts properly(read: slower), the tires barked on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. And that's without powershifting.

An automatic will shift quicker and more precisely than any manual gearbox, period.

Question

How hard is it to adjust the gear stops properly on say a Hurst shifter? If adjusted wrong, won't that screw your tranny?

If you can use wrenches, you can adjust any of them. If the stopbolt are too far out, the shifter can be overextended. If the stopboltls are too far in, the shifter cannot engage the gear fully.
