Default '82 GT fixed at last!

Turns out the new fuel unfastened all the sediment in the tank allowing it to flow into the line. Changing the filter enabled the debris to move up an inch or so. Enough fuel continued to get through to run the engine, but apparently in a very lean mixture, which heated things up severely under the hood. This accounted for the melting of the speedo cable housing and eventual vapor lock.
There was also present an intermitent open circuit in the wiring that would cause a no spark condition every so often.
Two problems at once make for a great deal of frustration, eighteen months in the shop, and eight hundred bucks worth of bill. Could have been worse.
But, for the first time since 1990, everything on the car is working.
