Ypsi pooper
Hi folks,

This is a true story, even though some of you may not believe it. I was listening to "The Jay Thomas Show" today on Howard Stern's second Sirius channel (channel 101). Jay and Shuli (his co-host) were talking about an ongoing problem at a playground in Ypsilanti, MI. For the past 6 months, someone has been pooping on a children's slide - repeatedly over and over and over again. The town installed security cameras, but they can't seem to find the suspect. A business owner in Ann Arbor, MI had signs printed that read: "It's your civic doody to catch the Ypsi pooper". (Note that he spelled it "doody" instead of "duty".) He hung up these signs throughout the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area. Apparently, it made national news. Jay Thomas picked up the story and discussed it today for about 30 minutes. They cracked numerous jokes about it. And, of course, many callers called in with even more jokes. A few callers even claimed to be the "Ypsi pooper" himself.

When I heard it, I was hysterical laughing. My mother was cracking up too. Of course, it really hit home for me because I used to live in Ann Arbor, MI when I was a graduate student at the University of Michigan in 1989-1990. I am familiar with the whole Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. I used to go shopping in Ypsilanti, and I used the Ypsilanti post office too.

Its like all these kids are doing something they think is funny cause they seen someone else do something and get on some web cam site... MTV had that show Ridiculousness of people doing stupid things. Im sure this creep has video of himself doing his deeds on that slide. I hope when he gets caught he has to clean out the cages at some horse stable or a pig pen on some farm...
Good Luck Ann Arbor

Hi John,

I agree. I think that's part of the reason why Jay Thomas discussed it at length. On the one hand, it made for good show material, and everyone got a few laughs. But on the other hand, I think he and everyone else on his show want this guy to get caught and receive a proper punishment. In fact, they discussed what should be done to this guy (or woman?) if/when he/she is caught. By Jay discussing it, it raised awareness about it on a national level. From his language and tone of voice, I could tell that Jay was disgusted and annoyed.

To my knowledge, Howard Stern hasn't discussed it - yet. I listen to his show every day. But if/when he does, I know exactly what he will say: "What the hell happened to this guy in his childhood that would cause him to do something like this?" He always says that about people who are "damaged" (psychologically) or about people who do stupid/crazy things that he can't wrap his head around.

If anyone is interested, just enter "ypsilanti poop" in a Google search, and several news articles should appear. The authorities are trying to apprehend this suspect.

The stupid pizza shet has "rights" so if he does get caught he probably won't get his name or picture in the news if he is under age!!! I hope he belongs to some "not my child" type of parents... They are the ones that show up in court with the kid in a brand new suit crying his eyes out...not so funny now is it Brandon!!! Thats what I'm guessing his name is going to be... like those late 90's teenage star who can't get a job because their fall from stardom was so difficult...

Hi John,

You may or may not have been implying that the suspect is a college student doing a prank. I don't think it is. I feel that it is the work of a seriously mentally ill adult. I say this for 2 reasons.

First, if it was a college prank, it would have happened only once. It wouldn't happen repeatedly over and over and over again.

Second, I think the playground where this occurred is in Ypsilanti's historic district. There are 2 major universities in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, but none are near the historic district. Ypsilanti is east/southeast of Ann Arbor, on the other side of the highway. Highway 23 splits the towns. The University of Michigan's main campus is in downtown Ann Arbor. And the UM's engineering buildings (where most of my classes were) are on the North campus, which is northeast of downtown Ann Arbor. Eastern Michigan University is in Ypsilanti. But, if I remember correctly, I don't think EMU's campus is anywhere near Ypsilanti's historic district.

For these reasons, I think the suspect is an adult with major psychological problems. I don't think it is a college student's prank. But I could be wrong. It's just a hunch on my part.

Hi John,

We both posted at the same time in this thread. Isn't that weird? I was actually responding to your first post. As I was typing my response, you posted your second post.

You have an interesting theory. But I still think it is an adult, possibly a homeless person who is seriously mentally ill.

Ypsilanti, MI is actually a very blue collar, working class town. Many auto workers live there, and it has a significant minority population.

When I was a graduate student at UM, my aunt's sister (my mother's sister-in-law's sister) live in Ypsilanti. I went to her house a few times because it was only a few miles from my apartment in Ann Arbor. It wasn't a great area. I wouldn't want to live there. And that was 25 years ago. It is probably even worse now.

I loved Ann Arbor. It is 10,000 times better than New York City. When I lived in Ann Arbor, I was "out in the sticks". I lived in a private, off-campus garden apartment that was in a development north of Plymouth Road, which was even further north than the UM's North Campus. That was the "boon docks" back then. I was in the middle of nowhere, right next to a forest. It was really quiet, just the way I like it.

About 80-90% of Ann Arbor was beautiful back then. I would imagine it still is. It has the most expensive real estate in all of Michigan. Of course, it is a college town, with a wildly fluctuating (when school is or is not in session) and transient population. Many college professors, intellectuals, and academics live there. It also has a heavy "international flavor" because so many international students attend the UM. About 80-90% of the people who lived in my development were international students from Asia (China, Korea, India, Pakistan, etc.).

We live just west of Chicago, olny one street separates us. When I tell my address over the phone and give my zip code people still think we are in Chicago..LOL. We moved here in 93 because we couldn't afford to move in the northwest side of Chicago..that one block meant the difference on a $200.000 house with a $4800 property tax bill or the $120.000 home we got with and $1800 property tax bill every year. Yeah, we can cross the street on each side of town and we'd be back in Chicago and two other different suburbs on the others 2 sides...On my ride to work I go through 4 other towns and I only travel 11 miles. I do like so open ground once and a while... New Buffalo at the 4 Winds Casino is as far as we have bee into MI...
