this could also be titled as "to buy or not to buy... without testdriving"

wellll, im trying to see if the guy will let us come testdrive it later this week, prolly thursday evening.

here lies the problem tho. He bought it jsut to re-sell it. (hes about 20-somthin, just likes mustangs..and im sure hes tryin to turn a profit) but he doesn't have tags on it, or insurance, and hes never really driven it much himself, so its not like i can even go and trust his honesty, whether he'd be truthful or not. i mean we can run it..rev it up, and drive it short distances, but no highway, or anything like that. ...and i kno basically what to look over the car for, but can you really buy without a full testdrive?

what do u guys think? maybe i could contact the last owner. he's not selling it anymore, and i would hope he'd be strait up with me on the car.

btw- heres the add

FORD MUSTANG GT
'88, 5.0, 5-spd., 75K mi., blue & silver w/gray interior, power options, CD, aluminum wheels, very clean, runs good, $4600.

(except now its been updated, lowered to $4200)

and it really does have 75K mi. i check it on car fax, the story the guy told me matches the carfax too. it had ONLY 25K by 97 (!!!) then from 97 to 01 it had about 50K put on it (guess it was riden kinda hard) but the first 9 or ten years of its life were pampered, and it still shows.

well, thanks!

LoL, yes but, alas the $4200 is owned by the power of mom (im 17, if u read my other post) and im looking for my first car. and have been looking. and looking. and ..u get the idea.

and the fact being that im human, and 17, i get the rush of emotion an adrenaline, and i feel like HEY! what can go wrong? hehe, but im not quite in the same situation as alot of u guys (i assume).

I do like the car tho. its just kinda one of those things. ..haha i don't kno why i even said its 'one of those things', cus i don't even kno what kinda thing it is that i mean..oh well. i guess its just when my dear mother says..so whats so good about this car again? that i really don't kno what i can do to express the the fact that its a mustang! its a 5.0! id love it! oh well i guess we'll see

btw- i am not a moocher. Ive had my licnese for a good year now, and lived without a car this long, which all my friends parents bought them their $17000 jeeps and such things. im gettin a job and trying to cover all the expenses myself http://64.21.184.154/ubb/tongue.gif
but thats also why i need to be careful what im gettin myself into.

Make sure you check the fluids. Brake, coolant, oil, power steering...etc. when you go drive it have someone go with you and drive behind it to check the exhaust fumes. with 75K and stock h-pipe w/ converters you should not have anything but maybe a little black smoke come out of the tailpipes. even then it would only be under wide open throttle. Check the tie rod seals on the steering rack for leaks. Do a real hard brake on it from 45 mph and see if the brakes pulsate in any way. These are some of the things I would do to test the car. I would say that the car is good because of Carfax and the story he is telling. Good luck and I hope that you get a good mustang. As for the parent thing, try convincing them that you want the car for what it is and not what it can do. http://64.21.184.154/ubb/biggrin.gif

That covers most of everything I can think of except for this. If you have Triple A, and I'm not even sure if you have to be a member, you can for $75 or so take it in and have a full diagnostic done on it to see if the car is what it is supposed to be. If there is anything wrong with it in any way, it should come up on their machine. Just a thought. Otherwise, have sombody you know and trust who also knows alot about cars come with you.

thanks again for all the help! imr eally hopin this works out.

but theres just one thing- can you take a car to AAA even if its not 'registered' to anybody, and with no tags or insurance? ..well i guess u could, but... getting it there... i guess ill just have to see what this guy can do, as i said he's a young guy, but still older than me, and he just buys em to shine em up a bit. ...it does seem like HE knows what hes doin tho, so, i would hope he wouldn't buy some sloppy jalopy to try and resell it. ..then again u never know, but the other car he has seems as nnice as this one also. (its a 90 LX I-4 tho)

guess time will tell, ill keep u guys posted and thnx!

ps- oh anybody have any idea why the stock foglights might not be in place? i kno they cost about 50 for a new set.

Most places I have seen charge $40 per light (new) I would buy covers for them.

The stock foglights break with the slightest bump or rock hitting them. I know most people just take them out when they break rather than continuing to replace them.
