View Full Version : Sunroofs- factory installed vs aftermarket, how to tell??

Got quick Q concering the 88gt im thinkin about. Its got a sunroof, and i just read in the 5.0 tech guide (published by MM&FF) that they sunroofs either came as a done-in-the-factory job, or as a done-by-the-dealer or soundshop job. they also said that the dealer roofs were great, and the only reason for leakage was the 'drainage tubes thruough the B-pillars got clogged' so they said. they also said that the dealer or aftermarket jobs were a no-go, rattles, leaks you name it.

what i was wondering is how can u tell? they said that the factory jobs were flip-up and removable, while otheres were different. I remeber this one flipped up, but didn't try or think to see if it did anything else. they showed a pic of an aftermarket one. it had a clear glass part, as usual, but had two black plastic things on the front thru the glass, and one on the back where the latch is. u see these from the OUTSIDE looking at the roof.

the car i was looking at did not have these, it was just a smooth piece of glass from the outside looking at it.

i can scan the pic of the aforementioned 'no-go aftermarket job' if u need a better description of what i mean.

...welll for all of that, basically what is the differnec from the stock from the factory sunroof, and one done after market (or at the dealer..this is what seems funny to me...but i guess the dealer might do it as an aftermarket job, not like it would come from the factory)

thanks for any help or advice on this topic!

If the sunroof was originally installed at the factory, the Certification Label will indicate B under the sunroof code(S) which is next to the axle code(AX).

Of course, a factory installed sunroof would also be indicated on the build sheet and window sticker if those were available to inspect.

Pardon my ignorance, i just looked on the doortag decoder. ...im really not that dumb, just tend to ask questions from stangers before trusting myself is all (haha) anyway, i looked at the tag decoder for an 88 GT, and under the S section, the choices are either C (sunroof) or D (t-tops) or blank, meaning neither. i would assume this is correct? or is it B for some reason?

thanks

I got the Sunroof code B(sliding glass) from different sources. Sunroof code C(removeable glass) would be correct. Obviously the sources I have don't match the GT and Door Tag Decoders (http://www.mustanggt.org/forms/decoders.htm). If you need any more information that's not provided on this website, look in the Bookstore (http://www.mustanggt.org/bookstor.htm). Of particular interest is The Official Ford Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference & Performance Handbook 1979 Through 1993 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0837602106/19821993mustangg/102-9224193-4388935) in the 5.0L and General Mustang Books (http://www.mustanggt.org/bookstor1.htm) section.

thankya kindly again. I believe it is a factory isntalled job, although i haven't looked yet. I was snooping are my neighbors back lot where he has his old parts cars, and theres an old (early 80's) capri sitting back there, no doors, hatch, or anything, but it does have a sunroof, and its removable, and is exactly like the one on the 88GT i was looking at.

I played around with it, and then traced all the drainage tubes, and saw how they are connected, go thru the car, and empty out the bottom. ..this just got me to wondering tho... what if one of those tubes dry rotted or has a leak or some other way came loose? wouldn't that make a **** of a mess? and be a pain to tear everything out to fix too id assume. I guess there would be no way of knowing either, other than to test it by dumping a little water down it, while im checking it out.
