MY '85 has 1,D,(D) on the selecter plate. I have seen a later model Mustang with 1,2,D,(D) on the cover. Is this an AOD? If it is then what year did it change? Does any one her have a stock tranny with the latter selecter positions?

My '86 AOD GT was also setup the way your '85 is. I think it was stupid. All other cars I've seen with 4 speed automatics had 4 shifting positions.
When drag racing it I had to move the shift to D then pull it back again to hold second gear after leaving first gear.

I went back & took another look at the car in question. It had 1,2,D,N,etc,no (D). It must have been a C3 or a C5.
One thing I have learned from reading is that the AOD was not originaly designed for a high torque motor like the 5.0 HO.
Another thing I have learned is that Ford designed the Mustang to appeal to a wide range of customers. I think the AOD was put in there for those other folks that buy it.
All I can say is: Thank God for the aftermarket!

Don't know. I have never read or heard of anything other then the AOD behind the HO 5.0. I was just considering alternative bolt on 4 speed automatics with some street performance value. I am looking at a performance rebuild of my AOD but I wanted to look at all the other options available before I drop the cash.
