Carpet over rear speakers?

I beleive my interior is all original. I noticed that their is carpet over the rear speakers is this original for an 89 Convertible GT. I have seen other cars where there is a grill for these speakers and it is not covered by carpet. Thanks.

My 88 Convt. is like that too. I've got a blown speaker, so now I have to figure out how to get those suckers out. http://64.21.184.154/ubb/wink.gif I really need to invest in a factory service manual. I'm pretty handy, do all my own work to the Conquest, but I don't know the ins and outs of the Fox body yet.

In my 87 convertible the speakers are also covered by the carpet. A hot trick to get access to the speaker is when you have removed all screws that you can see, try to lift the side panel UP and then it will come off.
