I was just wondering if anyone knew how to tell if a 5.0 has a MAF or SD(Speed Density) on a '88 5.0. I am thinkin of buyin a mustang this weekend, and need some info. Is the MAF easy to spot on the intake??

this page looks fairly reliable, and it says for '88 GTs MAF's were ONLY on California cars....anyway to tell if its a 'California car'

any pics/help would be greatly appreciated...
thanx

Is it possible to change from SD to MAF? Is it easy/hard?

Easiest way to tell is by looking at the air intake. The SD systems does not have the sensor monitoring air flow to the TB. The MAF systems will have some wiring and a sensor attached to the air intake.

speed density systems don't have an air flow device on the air intake "elbow". all gt's and lx's made between 1986-88 were speed density.

changing over to mass air isn't that difficult. you can get all the parts you need from an auto recycler(don't forget the computer), or you can get it some aftermarket performance stores.
