View Full Version : Why is the convertible GT heavier?
I have always seen that the Convertible is heavier then other models? Why? Where is the extra bracing or weight at? Thanks.

There is extra bracing under the front as well as at the sub frames. Also... If you own a GT convertible you have extra weight with the plastic ground effects and attaching hardware.

I think there is also added weight in the top assembly itself. There is a lot of heavy duty metal in there compared to a regular roof. Also the lift cylinders, motor, etc...

Weight differences aren't that significant.
Curb weight for the sedan is 2751lbs, hatchbach is 2818lbs and convertible is 2953lbs. This is right from Ford in 88 at least.

Converts were always generally heavier than their counterparts for a few reasons. One is after you remove the steel roof the car's body will need support from below. The roofs were made to take up stress, and strengthen the structure. In the older cars the motors, and controls needed to raise, and lower the conv. roof also added weight.

verts are structurely designed to take the stress of not having a roof so the chassis is reinforced for the flex of the vert.
